We look in the mirror and the thoughts immediately flood our minds. I’m too tall, too fat, too weak, or too dumb. I’m a second-rate wife, an unfit mother, or an ill-equipped employee. The focus on the negative takes over and blinds us to reality. The reality that “we are fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalm 139:14. That we are created “in His own image” Genesis 1:27. The reality that “we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood” and “God’s special possession” 1 Peter 2:9.
Do you ever ask yourself why? Why does the devil work so hard to destroy your self-image? Why does he make it his business to whisper these lies to you day after day? Why does he, first and foremost, attack your mind?
1. To Cause You Pain
1 Peter 5:8 says that the devil is your enemy and he wants to destroy you. Causing you pain brings him joy. He looks for ways to trip you up and tear you up. The devil wants to see you suffer and spends time and energy toward that end.
2. To Weaken Your Passion
We are driven by our passions. They give rise to vision and drive us toward God’s calling in our life. Proverbs 29:18 says that without a vision we will perish. When your enemy comes at you with lies that he has cooked up in the pit of hell, he is seeking to destroy your passion or your vision for God’s call on your life.
3. To Hinder Your Purpose
Romans 12: 5-8 tells us that God has given us unique gifts that we are to carry out as members of his body. When the enemy messes with our head (what we think), he gains control of our heart (what we feel), and then takes over our hands (what we do). That is the answer to your why. When he whispers lie after lie into your ear from the moment that you wake up, the devil is seeking to stop the purpose of God from being fulfilled in, and through, your life. We are each divinely appointed for a specific destiny that only we can fulfill. You have a sphere that you, and you alone, are called to serve.
We need to combat the lies of the devil with the truth of God’s word. 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to take captive every thought that sets itself up above the knowledge of Christ. So rise up, look in the mirror and remember who you are.
