Every January, many of us set ambitious goals—whether it’s healthier living, wiser spending, character growth, or personal makeovers. Yet by February or March, we often find ourselves slipping back into old habits, leaving those goals behind. Does this sound familiar?
If so, I’d like to share some timeless wisdom from my favorite book—the Bible. Specifically, 1 Peter 1:13 offers powerful guidance to help you set goals and, more importantly, stick to them. Here’s how you can apply it:
1. Roll Up Your Sleeves
“So roll up your sleeves . . .” – 1 Peter 1:13 (MSG)
When you roll up your sleeves, it signals readiness for hard work. You recognize the task ahead and mentally prepare to dig deep and get things done. The same mindset applies to goal-setting. As you plan for the year, approach your goals with prayer and determination. Be ready to put in the effort and stay committed, even when the initial excitement fades.
2. Put Your Mind in Gear
“Put your mind in gear . . .” – 1 Peter 1:13 (MSG)
Achieving goals requires intentional planning and follow-through. For years, one of my goals was to eat healthier, but I found myself reaching for fast food because it was convenient and cheap. Change only happened when I assessed my habits, explored healthier alternatives, and developed a plan that fit my lifestyle.
I began packing healthy snacks (like nuts, fruit, and granola bars) over the weekend, which I brought to work throughout the week. I replaced soda with fresh-pressed juice and water. Recognizing that healthier food often costs more, I adjusted my budget to reflect this new priority.
The lesson? Don’t rely on willpower alone—set yourself up for success by planning thoughtfully and making changes that align with your daily life.
3. Avoid Slipping Back into Old Habits
“Don’t lazily slip back into those old grooves . . .” – 1 Peter 1:13 (MSG)
Without accountability, it’s easy to revert to old patterns. One way to avoid this is by partnering with someone who will pray for you and check in on your progress. Share your goals with a trusted friend or mentor, and commit to meeting quarterly to review your progress.
During these check-ins, reflect honestly:
• What worked well?
• Where did you fall short?
• Do you need to reassess your priorities?
Having someone walk alongside you can reignite your focus and keep you on track.
4. Be Ready to Receive the Blessing
“Be totally ready to receive the gift that’s coming . . .” – 1 Peter 1:13 (MSG)
Approach your goals with expectation and faith, trusting that God will provide the resources and strength you need to succeed. As Proverbs 16:3 reminds us, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”
When you align your plans with God’s will, you invite His guidance and blessings into the process. Step forward with confidence, knowing that as you do the work, God will make a way.
This year, let’s roll up our sleeves, put our minds in gear, stay accountable, and expect great things from a faithful God.
