This past weekend, my cousin Johan and I went away for a spa weekend in Orlando, Florida that we put on the calendar several months ago. Jo and I live busy lives, and I know you can relate to what it’s like to balance the day to day demands that come with managing a family, work, and extracurricular activities. It can be stressful. So, it was important for us to be purposeful about carving out the time. It was an amazing weekend of fun and fellowship and I want to share a few of my takeaways:
Be intentional about nurturing Christ-centered relationships.
Ointment and perfumes rejoice the heart: and the good counsels of a friend are sweet to the soul.” – Proverbs 27:9
Jo and I live several hours away from each other, so spending physical time together is not always practical. We call each other and text often, but nothing comes close to spending time together without any distractions. Since Jo and I love the Lord, our time together felt more like a retreat. Our conversations naturally veered in the direction of our faith. We encouraged one another as we shared our devotionals and talked about how we saw God working in our lives. I walked away from the weekend feeling closer to my cousin, encouraged, and grateful that we have new memories we will treasure for a long time.
Take time to care for your mind, body, and soul
So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.” – Hebrews 4:9-11
Our time away was short — just two days. But we slept in, read our devotions in bed, went for leisurely walks, made sure we ate healthy food, and spent some time at the spa. Even in that short amount of time, we felt refreshed and renewed. Sometimes we need to unplug from our day to day lives to take care of ourselves. But, self-care doesn’t require a special trip or a spa appointment. It can mean that we carve out some time for quiet reflection, are mindful of how we eat and re-focus our minds on God.
Have fun
A glad heart makes a cheerful face…” -Proverbs 15:13
In addition to relaxing, we also had some fun. We were blessed to attend a Danny Gokey concert at Calvary Orlando church. We had such an amazing time worshipping, singing, and dancing. Being able to laugh and be silly was a true blessing. We have the selfies to prove it! 🙂
So, I want to encourage you make self-care a priority. Be purposeful about carving out the time — even if you have to plan months in advance.
